- →Do you know which specialty bureaus might be hurting your score without you knowing?

- →Do you want clarity instead of guessing?
If you answered YES to even one of these… this guide is for you.
What Most People Don't Know
- Weekly free credit reports are NOW PERMANENT — not a temporary pandemic benefit. But 73% of consumers still don't know they can pull weekly.
- The Equifax settlement expires December 31, 2026 — giving you exactly 8 months to pull 52+ free Equifax reports before access ends permanently.
- There are 12 specialty bureaus most people have never heard of that can deny you housing, insurance, or jobs — and you get one free report per year from each.
- The CFPB complaint system is functionally broken in 2026 — you need a new escalation strategy that actually works.
- Medical debt under $500 is off your report permanently — but unpaid medical debt OVER $500 can still destroy your score in 35 states.
- Fake credit report sites are charging $29.99 for "free" reports — and the red flags are so subtle, most people fall for it.
1. Weekly Access Is Now Permanent
What started as a pandemic emergency measure is now the permanent standard. You can pull your credit report from all three bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — once per week, every week, for free.
The access point is AnnualCreditReport.com — the only federally authorized source. This is not a "hack" despite what TikTok claims. This is federal law.
| Source | Frequency | Cost | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| AnnualCreditReport.com | Weekly | $0 | Get Free Reports |
| Equifax myEquifax | 6x/Year (Settlement) | $0 | Via Your Email |
| Experian | Weekly via ACR | $0 | Phone Guide |
| TransUnion | Weekly via ACR | $0 | Phone Guide |
Critical Distinction
AnnualCreditReport.com shows what is in your report as of a point in time but provides no alerts when something changes. For continuous monitoring with daily score updates and breach alerts, you need a monitoring service like IdentityIQ.

2. Equifax Settlement Expires December 31, 2026
The 2017 Equifax data breach settlement included free credit monitoring and additional free report access. This benefit expires at the end of 2026. After December 31, 2026, the extra myEquifax reports go away permanently.
If you were affected by the breach, you can still claim benefits through the official settlement portal (search "Equifax Breach Settlement" in your email or at EquifaxBreachSettlement.com). The deadline to file claims has passed, but existing claims can still be processed.
Action Required Before December 31, 2026
Pull your 6 remaining Equifax reports through your email (check your myEquifax account) before the settlement expires. After that date, you return to the standard weekly access through AnnualCreditReport.com only.
3. The $16 Fee Cap and Who It Applies To
If you exhaust your free reports and need to purchase additional copies, federal law caps the price at $16 per report. This applies to all three major bureaus.
With weekly access now permanent, most consumers will never need to pay for a report. However, if you need an official report for a legal proceeding, lender dispute, or other formal purpose, the $16 cap protects you from overcharges.
Bureau Direct Pricing (2026)
- Equifax: $16 (fee cap)
- Experian: $16 (fee cap)
- TransUnion: $16 (fee cap)
4. Medical Debt Changes by State
There is no nationwide federal ban on all medical debt credit reporting as of March 2026. The CFPB rule was vacated. Consumer confusion is massive because coverage treated the rule as though it had passed into law.
The reality:
- Paid medical debt was voluntarily removed by the bureaus and remains off.
- Medical debt under $500 was voluntarily removed by the bureaus and remains off.
- Unpaid medical debt over $500 can still appear on your credit report.
15 states have passed their own medical debt protections. Check your state's specific rules. For detailed state-by-state breakdown, see our Medical Debt 2026 Guide.
📍 State-by-State Medical Debt Protections
Your state might have protections you don't know about. Medical debt reporting rules vary dramatically by state — and missing your state's deadline could cost you thousands on your score.

5. The 12 Specialty Bureaus Nobody Tells You About
Beyond Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, there are 12+ specialty bureaus that track different types of data. Landlords, insurance companies, and employers often pull these instead of — or in addition to — the Big Three.
If you were denied an apartment, insurance, or job based on a report you have never seen, it likely came from one of these:
| Bureau | What It Tracks | Free Access |
|---|---|---|
| LexisNexis | Insurance risk, identity verification | Yes - mail request |
| Innovis | Alternative credit bureau | Yes - online |
| ChexSystems | Banking history, bounced checks | Yes - online |
| NCTUE | Utility payment history | Yes - mail request |
| The Work Number | Employment and income verification | Yes - online |
| CLUE Auto | Auto insurance claims history | Yes - LexisNexis |
| CLUE Property | Home insurance claims history | Yes - LexisNexis |
| MIB | Life/health insurance applications | Yes - mail request |
| SageStream | Alternative credit data | Yes - online |
| CoreLogic | Rental history | Yes - online |
| TeleCheck | Check writing history | Yes - mail request |
| Clarity Services | Subprime lending data | Yes - online |
Each bureau must provide one free report per year upon request. Most require a mailed request with identity verification. For the complete access guide, see our Free Credit Report Checker.
6. Imposter Sites and How to Verify
The FTC warns that other sites pretend to be associated with AnnualCreditReport.com and use terms like "free report" or URLs that misspell the official site's name. A creator posted a video of a fake AnnualCreditReport-lookalike site that charged $29.99 for a "free" report. This video was shared across multiple platforms with hundreds of "this almost happened to me" comments.
The ONLY Official Free Credit Report Site
https://www.annualcreditreport.com
This is the only federally authorized source for your free annual credit reports. The site is jointly operated by Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion as required by federal law.
Red Flags for Imposter Sites
- • URL variations like "annualcredit-report.com" or "freecreditreport.com"
- • Asking for credit card information before showing your report
- • Charging any fee for your "free" report
- • Pop-up ads or aggressive marketing during the process
- • Requesting more personal information than SSN + DOB + address
If you gave information to an imposter site, run a dark web scan immediately with NordProtect or Aura to check if your data is being traded.

7. Dispute Escalation in 2026 (CFPB Is Gone)
The CFPB's staff has been reduced from approximately 248 employees to around 50. Credit report complaints are approaching five million annually — up from 1.3 million in 2023. The standard "dispute, then CFPB complaint" advice is now functionally broken.
The new escalation sequence that works in 2026:
- 1Certified mail dispute with specific documentation and a request for method-of-verification under FCRA Section 611
- 2State Attorney General complaint — California, New York, and Illinois are actively pursuing credit bureau enforcement
- 3Section 623 direct furnisher dispute to the data furnisher (not the bureau)
- 4CFPB complaint as paper trail for potential legal escalation
- 5Consumer attorney consultation if all else fails (FCRA violations carry statutory damages)
The e-OSCAR online dispute system often does not send your documentation to the furnisher. Use certified mail to ensure proof of delivery and full document transmission.
