FCRA Section 611 is the reinvestigation provision of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. It requires credit bureaus to investigate disputed items within 30 days and delete unverifiable information.
Once a dispute is received, the bureau must complete reinvestigation within 30 days. If the consumer provides additional information during that period, the window extends to 45 days.
If the furnisher (original creditor or collector) cannot verify the accuracy of the item, the bureau must delete or modify it. This is the primary legal mechanism behind credit dispute success.
